Fellowship Overview

The American Academy in Rome is a prominent overseas center that champions independent studies and advanced research for scholars and artists in the fine arts and humanities from a variety of institutions across the world.

We have partnered with the Academy to provide a residency in Rome for a scholar or artist on the Johns Hopkins faculty. The selected Affiliated Fellow will live and work within the Academy’s dynamic international community which fosters intellectual and artistic pursuits, dialogue across disciplines, and creative exchange.   

More than a place of residence, the Academy is a vibrant hub where fellows are immersed in Rome’s rich cultural legacies while engaging daily with peers from diverse fields. This combination of uninterrupted time for research and the dynamism of the Academy’s community offers fertile ground for reflection, exploration, and innovation.

Residency

The 2026 Johns Hopkins University Affiliated Fellow will have the opportunity to spend four to eight weeks in residency between May 4 – June 26, 2026.  

The Affiliated Fellow will be provided with housing (usually a single room with private bath), meals, and access to the Academy’s scholarly resources, including its renowned library, photographic archive, Norton Van Buren seminar room, and archaeology study collection. Fellows are also invited to take part in a rich calendar of public programs – concerts, exhibitions, and symposia – that deepen engagement with Rome’s cultural life and the Academy’s international community.  

A stipend of $1,000 per week will be provided as well as a reasonable reimbursement of travel expenses to and from Rome.   

Eligibility

• Must be a Full-time Johns Hopkins faculty member 
• Work in one of the following disciplines: ancient studies; architecture; design; historic preservation and conservation; landscape architecture; literature; medieval studies; modern Italian studies; musical composition; renaissance and early modern studies; or visual arts 
  • Note: Studio space is not available for this fellowship. Therefore, proposed projects should not require it.
