Taskforce on the Arts

Johns Hopkins has a long and distinguished record of achievement in the arts—from world renowned conservatory training to a vibrant collection of public art. Yet until recently the university has lacked a comprehensive vision to guide, connect, and elevate those efforts.

Commissioned in spring 2024, the Taskforce on the Arts was charged with developing a strategy to amplify the arts across the university and integrate them more fully into academic and student life. After more than a year of consultation and assessment, the Taskforce released its final report in September 2025. This report offers a unifying vision for the future of the arts and will serve as a guide for creating a more intentional and meaningful arts landscape at the University.

Our Vision

  • Every student has meaningful encounters with the arts—as creators, scholars, collaborators, or audience members.
  • Teaching, research, and practice across all divisions are informed and enriched by the arts.
  • The arts are a core element of our institutional identity, vision, and practice.
  • Hopkins serves as a trusted public resource for culture and the arts.
  • With University support, Baltimore thrives as a leading city for the arts—fueling community, economic growth, civic engagement, wellness, and human flourishing.

What’s Next

To carry forward this work, Johns Hopkins has established a new Office of the Arts, within the Office of the Provost. Led by Dr. Daniel H. Weiss, the office will advance the Taskforce’s recommendations and serve as a central resource that empowers new initiatives and curricular innovations that further embed the arts into academic life, the student experience, and community partnerships across the University.
