Tracy Smith leads HOUR (the Hopkins Office for Undergraduate Research) and has been managing the office prior to its official launch in March 2017. She works to enhance the undergraduate research experience across all fields, programs, and departments by providing funding and presentation opportunities as well as guidance to undergraduates and mentors.
Tracy joined Johns Hopkins University in February 2011 as administrative support for the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT) in the Whiting School of Engineering. During her tenure at INBT, she had the opportunity to provide support to undergraduates, affiliated faculty and labs, the institute directors as well as coordinating the annual symposium and other key events. In 2014, she was invited to move to the Provost’s Office to provide support for Denis Wirtz, the Vice Provost for Research and his initiatives. In addition to other projects, Ms. Smith was given management of the long-standing PURA (Provost’s Undergraduate Research Award) Program. The growth of PURA under her management was key in the development and launch of the undergraduate research office, HOUR.
A native of central Massachusetts, Tracy earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. She and her family relocated to Maryland in 1996. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, she worked various positions in both industry and retail settings while raising her four children. In her spare time she enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending time with her two sons and two daughters.
