Lee Hawthorne

Associate Vice Provost for Strategic Student Initiatives

Dr. Lee Hawthorne serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Strategic Student Initiatives. In this role, Lee directs and manages short- and long-term critical priorities, initiatives, and activities for the division. She works alongside the senior leadership team in Student Affairs and in partnership with other university leadership to assist in the accomplishment of divisional goals. Lee develops and coordinates presentations, briefings, and major addresses for university leadership and also coordinates the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Lee served as Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, where she also taught master’s students in the higher education program. Additionally, she has worked at UMBC, University of Richmond, and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. Lee has worked in higher education for over 25 years in a variety of areas, including admissions, student life, leadership programs, diversity and inclusion, housing and residence life, fraternity and sorority life, and orientation. Lee loves her work and believes it doesn’t get any better than working on a college campus with so many bright, inquiring minds.

Lee earned her bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College; master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University; and her Ph.D. in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland. Lee is active in ACPA – College Student Educators International and was named a 2014 Diamond Honoree in recognition of her outstanding contributions to higher education and student affairs.
