Open discussions with your mentor regarding your research and professional development goals and needs is a critical component of your postdoctoral training experience. At Johns Hopkins University, every school and entity that trains postdoctoral fellows requires at least annual meetings between postdoctoral fellows and their faculty mentors to discuss:
the postdoc’s research progress and next steps
the postdoc’s professional development goals and any next steps
how the mentor can be helpful regarding each
These meetings need to be documented and in many departments this document is called the Individual Development Plan or IDP. Please consult your department or mentor for the specific format for the annual meetings and forms used to document such meetings.
